6 months down, 2.5 to go. i ended the first term (schematic/conceptual design) of my thesis project, the bootstrap union, three weeks ago. for the first time in my architecture career, i am able to use the suggestions of my final reviewers and implement them in my design. the final ten weeks (tectonic development) begin tomorrow. this is what i’ve come up with so far:

i’ve been thinking about the concept of fashions in architecture and how to create something that will look good when our collective tastes change. it probably has a lot to do with a delicate balance of materials, so the duckett house by john pardey architects should still be beautiful in 50 years.

ah, architecture that makes sense. copenhagen-based BIG (bjarke ingels group) skips the typical ego-stroking, pretentious architecture bullshit and presents projects in a manner that any layperson can get excited about. this is an inspiring, downright heroic lecture explaining some of their spectacular recent projects. it’s incomprehensibly comprehensible.

paul rodriguez, nike and the LA84 foundation put together this new skate plaza. aesthetically, it’s surprisingly architectural. functionally, it’s probably 120 degrees. i wouldn’t mind taking some turns in, say, january.

massing model for a highly-visible, mixed-use residential high-rise that i’m in the process of designing. it’s on burnside ave, at the intersection of the city grids in portland, or. basically, this is a dream project on a dream site for a studio under the supervision of nico larco and will bruder. too bad i’m getting paid -$10,000 for this.
